In recent years, several prescription medications have emerged as effective options for individuals struggling with weight loss. These drugs work in different ways, including appetite suppression, improving insulin sensitivity, and reducing cravings. However, knowing how to take these medications and understanding the proper dosing guidelines is crucial to maximize their effectiveness and minimize side effects. Below, we'll explore some of the most popular FDA-approved weight loss medications.
1. Wegovy (Semaglutide)
How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy is a higher-dose version of semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a hormone called GLP-1, which regulates appetite and food intake. Wegovy helps reduce hunger, leading to lower calorie consumption
How to take Wegovy
Wegovy is administered via a subcutaneous injection (under the skin), typically in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It should be taken on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.
What to do if you miss a dose of Wegovy?
If you miss your weekly injection of Wegovy and your next scheduled dose is more than 48 hours away, give yourself the missed dose. If the next scheduled dose is less than 48 hours away, skip the missed dose and administer the next dose at the usual time. Then, continue with the usual weekly schedule.
Always be sure to contact your physician if you begin to experience side effects from missing a dose, or are regularly missing doses.
Wegovy dosing schedule
The dose is gradually increased over several weeks. Typically, after 5 weeks, it is raised to 0.5 mg, and then 1 mg after an additional 4 weeks.
Dosing of Wegovy is based on the prescribing physician’s discretion.
